OPTIMUS TROPHY 3rd Round (SCRATCH TEAM) Away v Pyecombe GC SATURDAY 30 MAY – win 6 – 6 (away club rule)
In a nerve-racking finish, East Sussex National acquired the necessary 6 points required to go through to the quarter-finals. Trailing by 1 1/2 points to 2 1/2 after the morning foursomes, the team set about winning the afternoon singles.
Winning birdies on the 18th Hole by Hart/Hilton & Hope/Plant secured the much needed morning points, as Graham/Larkin & Rayasam/Hampson both lost.
In the afternoon singles, former England International, Mark Hilton produced a solid performance to win the top match, wins in matches 2 & 3 followed quickly, with Stuart Hope playing his first match of the year with an emphatic win over one of Pyecombe’s Collegiate stars. Matt Hart produced another great performance to win comfortably on the 17th.
Matches 4 & 7 were lost as Dean Plant and Steve Graham suffered rare defeats, so it was up to the three remaining matches to secure the win.
All looked good as both Prateek Rayasam & Rob Hampson led 1 up playing the 17th, but an unfortunate 3-putt from range by Prateek resulted in that match going all square. All eyes turned to Rob Hampson as secured his win on the 17th to join the crowds watching the drama unfold on the 18th. Both players hit good shots into the green, but it was the Pyecombe team that celebrated as their player rolled in his birdie putt from 12ft on the last to keep the match alive and win his match.
As the final match on the course favoured Pyecombe, the celebrations didn’t appear premature, but Andy Larkin had other ideas. The former Charlton footballer reduced the lead and took the match down the 18th, nervously both teams watched as the two players tried to win the match for their team. It was the Pyecombe player who buckled under the pressure as Andy Larkin sent a fairway splitting drive down the 18th fairway, a solid wedge shot afforded him the luxury of two putts to win.
The team has now been drawn away again against West Sussex GC in the Quarter-Finals. A big thanks to everyone who supported or Caddied with a special mention to Olly O’Hara, Paul Plant, Tony Plant, Nigel Phillips, Alan Ratcliffe, Paul Lewis, Stuart Silverlock & Marcus Opoku.
